Mark Alfred Carleton was an American botanist and plant pathologist best known for his plant explorations in Russia for the USDA and his introduction of hard red wheats and durum wheats from Russia into the American wheatbelt. Harry V. Harlan graduated from Kansas State College in 1904. He worked in Manila, Philippines from 1905-1908. After two years of graduate school at Kansas State, he joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture and worked for David Fairchild, then Mark Carleton, both scientists.
